WoW! A June Double Feature

So technically its the 1st of July, but since one of these was completed completely in June and the other just needed a hanging loop, I am still counting them both as June. During June I was out of town for two weeks… and so had to rely on what yarn I could fit in my carry on and loaner scissors for part of these projects.. so I figure a few hours into July isn’t technically cheating.

Choose your faction!

These both feature one sided designs, with crochet cuffs. The Alliance Lion has a scalloped edge cuff, and the “after thought” heel.

By the Might of the Lion!

The horde stocking has a traditional turned heel and a straight cuff. I contemplated going white instead of black, but Ben gave me a bit of the side-eye so stuck with traditional black.

For the Horde!

I hate it when a plan doesn’t come together….

So sometimes the concept of what you want to do makes you excited and you look forward to it with anticipation…. for me it was this plan:

This is a flat view of a round stocking… with a line down the middle, splitting mario and 2 blocks from the last block and the piranha plant.

However… as it came together there was some puckering. And then the scale was off. Like so far off I was debating about salvaging it into a stocking hat. But I think I’ll pull it out and go back to the drawing board:

Disappointing…. 😦

May: Pacman Stocking

I have had this stocking idea rattling around in my brain for a bit, and was surprised at how quick it actually ended up coming together. I used the after-thought heel method, and while it is certainly quite a bit easier when you are laying out the design phase, I’m not 100% sold on the final product look.

I am however… somewhat happy with how the stocking design came out. Its an all over design, which I think is extra nice.

Front Side!

Back Side!

I was actually thinking I would work on my May stocking this upcoming Wednesday… but got a bit carried away… maybe I’ll be able to tackle a second one this month! (But don’t hold your breath… you probably won’t look so good as a Smurf!)

Choose Your Own Favorite: Starcraft Stocking Edition

Back when I was a kid, we had these popular books in which you got to Choose Your Own Adventure.   Every so many pages along, you had a choice of how you wanted to take the story… kill the vandals (turn to page 3) or help the vandals (turn to page 10). So since I’ve finished up the third Starcraft stocking… its time to Choose Your Favorite! Here are the candidates:

Protoss, Zerg, Terran

So tell me… which one you like best, and I welcome your comments!

April Showers bring Creep and Zerg

A few days ago my brain gave its little “oh no its April already!” snap and I knew I had to get to work on the April Stocking or risk running up against Derby Party and Mother’s Day guest housekeeping and planning.  Since I had already conquered finding yarn that looked sort of like creep and sort of like the reddish magenta of the zerg logo, that’s what I decided to tackle.

This stocking is done with the purl side out, which breaks up the lines a bit more like creep I hope!

This month I tried a non-traditional stocking heel approach in which I added the heel to the stock after I knit the main part of the stocking.  After my first trial run, I decided the stockinette side of the sock looked not “creepish” enough and decided to swap to the purl side.  The cuff is actually crochet.  Being all manner of particular I see all the parts I wish looked “better.”

Being the third Starcraft stocking, I can now check that game pretty much off the list.

En Taro Father Christmas!

The Protoss are marching into March with this month’s Christmas Stocking!  (Ok that’s a terrible pun, I admit it)  However, I do like the Protoss colors.  I decided to take the gold and dark blue up in small flecks of additional color in the hanging loop.

Who says Protoss don't have a gift giving holiday?

This stocking is a one-sided design, suitable for filling with gifts, although if your gifts are of terrazine or vespene gas you may want to use another container first.   Highly suitable for hanging on a pylon, although pylon power is not required!  (Which is good because no one wants to hear “You Must Construct Additional Pylons!”)

Here is a little closer look at that Protoss logo:

Second Most Comfortable Wormhole in the Caterverse! (And Directions)

So yes… two cats means two cat beds.  And never one to repeat myself  (I got bored on the second sock of my first pair of socks!) I decided to up the ante with an Atlantis version of the StarGate Cat bed.

Cats are so smart they can use both Milky Way and Pegasus Galaxy design gates to access the Caterverse!

While I got through the repetitive main gate stitching a bit faster, when it came to the glyphs… the stars were about seven levels of more painful.  I ended up hand stitching the majority of those tiny blue dots.  For reference, they were created using a paperhole punch and there are 114 of those things.

Gates to the Caterverse have been tested at various stages of construction. Conan is testing the Pegasus gate pre-chevrons.

This gate is a bit bigger than my original gate.  It has a total of 10 symbols.  Otherwise basic construction was the same.

SGC (StarGate Cat) technology is adaptable to multiple universe gates.

I am providing my instructions with patterns on how to make your own gate.  These are freely available for private use only.  If you use these directions, I’d love a photo!

Most Comfortable Wormhole in the known Cat-erverse

This is Conan:

FDR had Fireside chats.... we have Fireside cats.

Conan has a foam fetish…. as in we used to have two cat beds, much loved and well used, but Conan liked to pull all the foam out from the bottom.  So now we have strange misshapen lumps of former cat beds.

So I thought I’d see what kind of unusual geeky cat beds were out there in the world… and frankly the pickings were pretty slim.  There was one person with her Millenium Falcon pillow bed… and lots and lots of fish.  So with some thinking and pondering I finally hooked on one familiar circular shape…. a Stargate!  You know that movie with Kurt Russell and James Spader where they travel through a giant circular wormhole gate to another planet and defeat Ra, that spun off a TV series(SG1), and then another TV series(Atlantis), and another TV series(Universe).  THAT!

So with a lot of repetitive decorative stitching….. I now give you the Stargate Cat Bed:

Sonja was quick to test the gate out.

My gate has 9 symbols (including Earth, my birth sign, and Ben’s birth sign) and 3 chevrons.  The interior floor is done in a wormhole blue.  Most importantly though… the bottom foam is covered with canvas to keep out a certain foam fetishist.

Link:  Lots of additional photos of the gate in progress

Update:  Well it took a few days but Sonja finally considered sharing her Stargate Bed with Conan.

Sharing... but only until the Atlantis version is done!

February… Celebrate the love of Zelda and Link

Hey! Listen!  its only 7 days into the month of February and I’ve gotten my stocking done!  I started this one with the desire to have a slightly nicer cuff.  So there are bobbles and Triforces.

How fitting that the Triforce is encircled in a stitch called the Trinity Stitch!

After that I went with a classic white stocking with a green heel and toe to complement the cuff.    This one I went a bit longer…. and then finished it off with a Link on one side and a Princess Zelda on the other.    I am not super happy with the pink of the faces and arms so I may redo those into a slightly darker shade to differentiate them more.  (Mental Note:  Add “flesh” to yarn shopping list)
